Every homeowner will eventually run into problems with their plumbing. Fortunately you don't need to be an Alpharetta plumber, like myself in order to solve these types of problems. The best thing to do is to learn about the plumbing in the house and be aware of common problems. Here are some basic tips to help you do just that.
1) If your faucet is leaky you will first want to make sure you block the drain with a rag to ensure no parts fall in. Then, take apart and remove the handle of the faucet. If the thread looks corroded or the O-Ring is in bad shape they may need to be replaced. Take the part you need to your local hardware store for replacement.
2) A running toilet can often be an easy fix and it can also save you money. First, take the lid off of the tank. Make sure the rods inside are straight and there is nothing blocking the stopper. If the ball has water in it, it needs to be replaced. You may also need to look at the flush valve and have it replaced.
3) Make sure you always have a catch in the drain to prevent clogs since most clogged drains are due to buildup of hair or debris. The best way to fix a clogged drain is to snake it. You can purchase a snake for about $20 from a hardware store. Using Drano or similar products is not recommended because they are corrosive and can ruin your pipes.
4) If you have a frozen pipe you should first locate where it is frozen. This will probably be near the exterior of the home. After that you can try using a blow dryer to heat the pipe up. Purchasing pipe insulation from a hardware store would help to prevent this problem.
5) Low pressure in a showerhead can often be from sediment buildup or corroded parts. Take apart and inspect the showerhead to see if it needs to be cleaned and you can do so with a toothpick or paper clip.
