Many people have raised questions regarding how hygienic the plastic resealable bag is, and whether or not we should use them for putting left-over food in the refrigerator, or for freezing meat and other items. Fortunately, for those of us who do tend to use these type of bags on a regular basis, they are perfectly safe to use!
Providing you only use them for storing food in once, and you do not wash them out and try to re-use them again, they are very hygienic. They may not be sterile, but neither are the containers that you use to keep food in the refrigerator in either. Manufacturers are made to adhere to certain standards when making the bags, and they are very careful to make sure nothing potentially damaging to health is used.
When it comes to freezing meat and other items in resealable plastic bags, the only thing you need to make sure of is that you use bags that are specifically designed for this purpose. Usually they are made from a thicker gauge plastic, or they have a double layer of plastic which helps to protect the meat or other food items from freezer burn.
They are not suitable to use for preserving fruit or pickling vegetables in either. This is one instance where you do need to use sterile containers, as any bacteria will soon spread and spoil all of your preserved fruit very quickly. That is why glass is the preferred choice for pickling jars.
As long as you are using fresh bags for storing your leftovers or for freezing your meat, you are totally fine to use resealable plastic bags for this. The great thing about storing food and leftovers in plastic resealable bags is that they are very easy to store in the refrigerator and they take up much less space than containers.
