If you are thinking about keeping bees even on a small scale, I have to say go for it. Beekeeping is a fun and interesting hobby, and well worth pursuing. The biggest costs associated with beekeeping are at start up, so you may want to find used bee hives for sale to start off with as this can save you a lot of money. Some of the other things that you will need are a course or book on beekeeping, a beekeeper suit, and a smoker.
The reason that I think beekeeping is so cool is because bees have a complex society, which you get to see first hand as a beekeeper. And of course, honey bees produce honey - which is a huge bonus. Overall, beekeeping is a great activity if you enjoy being outside in nature, and enjoy honey.
