There is nothing to beat the natural beauty of kitchen wood worktops in your kitchen. The natural warmth they provide can not be compared to other surfaces, especially if you are going for a rustic feel. The timeless quality of a wooden surface can not be matched by other materials which may age badly or discolor.

A wooden surface grows and matures with time. Most woods will darken with age and develops a rich and vibrant look and feel. Any other kitchen surface that is available will simply age with time.

Caring for your wood surface is easy if you are prepared to put a little effort into it. A solid wooden surface has the advantage of being easily sanded should any marks or stains develop in any part of it. This will always provide you with a clean smooth surface once more.

Once your solid wood kitchen worktops are installed they may require oiling depending on whether they have been pre-oiled or not. There are several oils available for this job. Putting oil onto the worktop will give your wood a warmth and depth which you will not get with modern varnish. The most popular oils to use are linseed oil and Danish oil. Linseed oil can first be thinned with white spirit. This makes it easier to apply and dry.

Apply the oil in a thin layer all over the surface of the wood with an old clean cloth. Spread it in the direction of the wood grain and work in light even strokes. Make sure not to miss the sides and lower surfaces of your worktop. Take special care to work it in around sinks and basins.

Leave it for 15 minutes to dry and then rework the surface with the same cloth. If it feels hard to use, then apply a small amount of oil to the cloth. This second working should even out any oil patches which may have formed and leave the surface smooth and shiny.
