This article takes a look at data and system restore software options worth considering when trying to return your PC back to a healthy working condition. The three main options are to use data recovery software, system restore utilities or backup software.

Data recovery software is often used after accidentally deleting or formatting files. These tools can retrieve lost data by scanning the drive looking for data clusters that have gone missing. While not actually repairing any part of the computer, they can be useful for salvaging data you were working on. Best of all, there are plenty of freeware options to choose from (e.g. Smart Recover) which often work just as well as the commercial options.

System restore software is more often used to make repairs to operating system programs and files. At its most basic, you could use the System Restore utility that comes with Windows and maintains a constant backup copy of operating system programs and registry files which you can reload (i.e. you roll back changes to these files). I prefer using commercial options (e.g. Reimage) for fixing my computer as they can often incorporate optimizations to the registry settings and generally make the computer run faster.

The final consideration is using backup software. Tools such as Microsoft's SyncToy can be used to synchronize data between your internal hard drive and external storage device (e.g. an external HDD). If you configure your backup software correctly then you should be able to include system files (e.g. the registry, email archives) as part of your backups in order to provide a way to restore these files if they should become corrupted.

Each of these data/system restore software utilities have their own benefits. In truth, you should be backing up your data on a regular basis, and if faults do occur then you can resort to using system restore functionality or data recovery tools to retrieve lost data if necessary.

It is a bit painful to see low cost laptops, which are a result of immense research and manufacturing efficiency, have been treated as if they were crap products good for nothing. One has to know that, the true worth of these laptops are lot more.
