Koh Phangan – Tips for having a Cheap Holiday

Koh Phangan used to be one of the cheapest islands in Thailand to stay on. It is for this reason that people used to stay for months at a time on the island. Recently prices for accommodation, travel, food and drink have sharply risen. This is not really to do with the rise in petrol prices (as people often say) but rather it is do with the principal of charging as much as the market will take.

I remember staying on Thong Nai Pan when the German Thai Break techno festival came to the beach. The bars hosting the minimal techno parties added $2 or $3 to the price of all drinks. They stopped selling the standard 10 Thai Baht water and suddenly only had 40 Thai Baht water available. I left the party in disgust.

That’s the way of the world it seems. There are, however, still many ways to have a cheap holiday in Koh Phangan. One of the first things to remember is that Thai people on Koh Phangan only get paid $3 a day. Of course they manage to survive so things are not as expensive as you imagine. Learning to speak a little Thai and learning the customs for politeness in Thailand will quickly pay you dividends in terms of getting the real price for things.

One of the best ways to save money on Koh Phangan is to buy food and drink from local shops. Don’t go to the shops on the beach front; rather hunt out the ‘Thai’ places at the back of the beach. You can often find food items that can do for lunch or breakfast. Fruit is a bargain in Koh Phangan. Yoghurt is also cheap. Beer and spirits in shops are a third of the price as at bars.

If you get the chance go to the new Tesco Lotus just outside of Thongsala. It has a good range of food, drink and other items. Since it is a supermarket they don’t over-charge tourists.

The other important tip for having a cheap holiday in Koh Phangan is to find a cheap bungalow place. It is a good idea to go on the internet to find a guide to Koh Phangan, but don’t book through the internet. You will pay upfront and will have no room for negotiation. Rather find a beach that you like and note down the names of cheaper places. When you arrive ask for a cheap bungalow. Often they will quote a much cheaper price than the internet. The price goes down the longer you stay. The cheapest bungalows being the ones you rent out on a monthly basis.

Finally, remember not to get angry. Thai culture is about politeness and keeping face. The aggressive manner of some Israelis bargaining make them generally disliked all over Thailand. It is not worth securing a good deal at the cost of being despised. And when you get to that magical white sand beach in Koh Phangan, have a Chang for me!

Moncao is an attractive spa town, well off the beaten track, with rural charm all of its own. The spa is to be found to the east of the town. There is a pleasant park to walk in and a free campsite by the river. The spa is quite popular with the Galicians, however, so it can become quite busy.

Moncao's festival is that of Corpus Christi on 18 June, and is marked with a ritualised costumed combat between St George and the Dragon. The dragon is finally defeated when St George manages to pull off one of his earrings! The festivities are, of course, accompanied by the usual bunting, a brass band in the bandstand on the main square and much drinking and dancing.

From Moncao there are two main routes to be followed. The N101 leads into the hinterland of the Alto Minho and eventually returns to the River Lima. Alternatively the N202 continues along the valley of the River Minho up to the border post of Sao Gregorio. The advantage of the Alto Minho route is that it gives easy access into the Peneda-Geres National Park, one of the least appreciated of the Iberian Peninsula's nature reserves, and one of the most off the beaten tracks areas of Portugal and Azores Islands that is still within relatively easy reach of civilisation. Having reached the almost frontier-like town of Castro Labreiro, however, there is no road across the reserve for cars. For experienced hikers there are some testing but rewarding routes south. The motorist though must return along the N202 road to Moncao.

The journey into the park will be described here first and the journey south into the finest vinho verde country of the Minho will be described later.

The Minho valley between here and Melgaco is wild with pine forests on either side, only at the river's edge are there vineyards. Five kilometres (3 miles) out of Moncao look out for the Palacio de Brejoeira, a lovely nineteenth-century building which, unfortunately, is not open to visitors. In the palace grounds is produced one of the finest of the vinho verdes, named after the palace.

About a third of the way along the valley towards Melgaco, around 10km (6 miles) from Moncao is a turning to the tiny village of Barbeita and its nearby prehistoric hill town, known as the Castro da Nossa Senhora da Assuncao. Like other castros this windswept hill-town was almost certainly occupied by the Celts and gives an intriguing insight into the lifestyle of these people, about whom little is known for certain.

Victoria, British Columbia can provide an authentic European experience to its visitors though it’s basically just a relatively quick ferry ride from Seattle, USA. With a large percentage of its dwellers coming from Great Britain, Switzerland, France and other European countries, only a resident of this melting pot of cultures can fully understand and depict clearly what makes this Canadian city amazing in its own right.

Though it would probably be very easy to come up with beautiful pictures of Victoria, someone who has little knowledge of the cultural heritage and natural treasures will not be able to translate these unique elements of the city in their photos. The melange of historical buildings, modern designed structures, quaint shops, old churches with stained glass windows is a testament of Victoria’s multicultural background, which for many is easy enough to cramp in a picture. Doing so however is a great disservice to a grand city such as Victoria, British Columbia. There are photographs that are nothing but snapshots but there are photographs that appeal to the different senses of those who see them. A professional Victoria photographer who has been regularly exposed to all the wonders endemic to this area may already find them rather trivial but their extensive knowledge of the these elements will allow them to maximize their artistic value thus giving you pictures that seem to come alive, reminding you once again of how in awe you were of the majestic Victoria, British Columbia.
