When you choose Cubic Zirconia as your gemstones for your engagement ring you are probably also going to opt for either a gold or silver band to match them. But which should you go for, and why should we prefer one over the other? Here are a few things to think about when trying to decide on these two precious metals for your ring.
1. Both silver and yellow gold CZ engagement rings, if pure silver and at least 9 or 10 carat gold, can be resized and the stones can be changed or upgraded, but it would be silly to later upgrade to a diamond that costs $500 or $1,000 and set into a silver setting that’s worth $50. However, a gold ring mounting that cost $400 will be exactly the same as the mounting you would in fact receive if you ordered the ring with an expensive diamond in the first place, therefore an upgrade makes perfect sense and you keep your original setting that may be worth a lot sentimentally.
2. Be careful when buying silver CZ rings that are really cheap because the silver may not be pure but just an electroplating. These rings will not be able to be resized or altered in any way at a later time. Be sure that you buy only 925 sterling silver that is solid, but read the fine print on websites because often rings will say 925 sterling silver electroplating and that is not the same as solid silver. When you buy gold, if it says 14k, it must be 14k.
3. The care of sterling silver is much greater than gold. A set of wedding rings set in silver, with CZ or diamonds, will require cleaning and polishing probably every month or more if worn daily. Swimming in chlorinated pools will tarnish them. Using cleaning products will harm the finish and the fine polished look of silver may not last. Gold also requires cleaning and some polishing but less frequently and unless the white gold is alloyed with a lot of silver, it will not tarnish very easily.
