With home decorating and interior design, it is all about proportion, balance and cohesion. What we mean by this is that all of the elements of your particular space need not be matching so much as they go together. There was a time when your wall clock stood as the guardian of your space, keeping time and watch over the gathered family in the den. It told the time and told you when you were supposed to take certain actions. You knew when to eat, turn on the radio, put the kids to bed and all of the other activities that you would track with time. Well, those days are gone for the most part.
Time is now told in the way of shows on TV, activities, and digital screens on cell phones, PDAs and home appliances. It isn’t uncommon for a stove top or refrigerator to have a clock on it. These are all conveniences that we have traded some aspects of simplicity for. This isn’t a call back to times gone by, just a statement about where we are at. In home design, there are some of those older, mid-century modern themes and design elements making a comeback. While you might not find those same looking wall clocks in your space, there are many clock designs that you might make the space for. In more recent trendy homes, there is a fascination with large objects.
The grander the scale, the larger the pieces need to be to maintain that all-important balance and proportion in the space. So, in our example here, if you have high vaulted ceilings or cathedral walls, then you can get away with a much larger wall clock. If your space is a bit tighter, then you can’t really justify a large 48” diameter clock hanging on your wall. It is really common sense in some ways. But, in the overall scheme of home design, some of the details can get lost and confused with trends and fads. You might think that you need to have something because that is what ‘everyone’ is doing. In reality, what will make your home and special room more welcoming is just the right sized wall clock.
