There are certain absolutes in this arena. A bride can always wear white shoes to her wedding. No one should be wearing white shoes to a funeral, no matter what. After laying down those absolutes, we enter into gray areas.
According to the Emily Post Institute, not wearing white after Labor Day is a dated rule. However, many still strictly adhere to that rule. Even if you are not all about fashion rules, this may be one that you want to adhere to, especially in situations where you are trying to get ahead in life.
Whether you like it or not, there will always be those who look down on those who wear white through the winter, thinking that they are lower class and tacky. In a job where you hope to climb the corporate ladder, you know not to talk about politics and religion. Leave the white pumps in the closet over the winter as well.
Another raging debate is when does “after Labor Day” end? The debate is between Memorial Day and Easter. History tells us that the rule is a Southern rule and that officially the ban was lifted at Easter in the South. This is fun since everyone likes to dress up in their light pastels and pair them with a new pair of funky white Classified shoes or ravel shoes.
The Northern twist is to extend it to Memorial Day, a sort of fashion legalism that you need not listen to. This view has popularized in recent years, but you will not see as many narrowed eyes and haughty glares if you show up at church on Easter Sunday in nice white shoes. You may still want to play it safe at work though, espec1ially if you live in the north, at least until after Memorial Day.
