Coots are a diving duck that is dark grey or black in color. The only part of their body that isn't dark is their white beak, red eyes, and it's white wing edge. Coots are likely to be spotted in slow moving water where they stay in big flocks. The coot has a diet of mostly aquatic plants that they dive for.

Coots were hunted in great numbers in the late 1800s but today they have less pressure from hunters and states put very high limits on them. To hunt coots the hunter can put out decoys. These coot decoys will attract the coot to fly close by. The coot is a bird that is easily fooled and will land right in your decoys. The coot decoy is a relatively simple item that is black in color except for the beak. The beak which is white in color breaks up the look of the decoy when setting on the water.

The coot decoy started as a crude shaped piece of wood and advanced to the modern plastic decoy. There has been coot decoys made of cork, foam, and paper mache throughout the 1900s. The coot decoy has a weighted keel to keep it upright in the water. The hunter can use a couple coot decoys along with other duck decoys to make them look more natural.

The accessories needed with your coot decoys are decoy cord and weights. The hunter will prepare the decoys by tying the cord on the keel and the weight at the other end of the cord. He will wrap the cord around the keel when storing the decoys in the decoy bag.

The hunter will take the bag of coot decoys out to the lake or larger pond. Here is where he will set them out in stable water. The hunter will unwrap the weight and make sure it hits the bottom before setting the decoy in the water. When he has all the decoys set out he will go to his blind where the hunter will be camoflauged. The blind can be a man made structure or a factory made blind. When the coots fly close enough the hunter will pop up and shoot at them hoping for success.
