The director's chair was totally and entirely, unquestionably off limits. It looked so enticing when it was empty, probably because I watched that pompous director sit in it all day, caressing the wood lovingly, calling on his right hand girl to dust the canvas hourly. The taboo made it all the more desirable. Had anyone aside from him ever sat in it? I wondered. There was no way. Even before he arrived on set, his girl guarded the chair like a hawk. She was the only one allowed to move it, touch it, even. Most of the company would have tattled, anyhow, if they saw someone stealing an opportunity; that's how they were. Then I had a thought: the janitor. The after-hours janitor. He could do it!
