Fish and vegetation go together. That's where you'll find 'em. Here are some tips for fishing largemouth bass in or around weeds.
Of course, where there is open water at hand the wise thing to do is to try to keep the fish in it and away from the weeds. A largemouth bass is more fun to play when he has full freedom of movement and the angler has the best possible control over the situation.
Yet many a fish has been lost by holding him too hard in an effort to keep him out of the weeds. A light pressure that lets the fish go into the weeds often means saving the trophy in the end.
Allowing a largemouth bass to get into the weeds after he's hooked is not always disastrous and is certainly preferable to holding so hard the tackle breaks. It may not be as much fun as playing one in the open water but big fish can be handled in the weeds without being lost. A light pressure will do it. Patience, too, to give a fish slack and time to go back to the open water through the same passage he entered the weeds, will very probably solve the problem.
When a big fish runs to the weeds, he's seeking safety from this thing that has hold of him. If after reaching them he finds the same nagging pull keeps on . . . or is supplanted by a light twitching which is even more annoying, he's as likely to go back and seek freedom in the open water as he is to drive on deeper into the weeds.
If, however, as soon as he strikes the weeds he gets an even harder pressure he'll respond naturally and twist and turn in a frenzied effort to escape. That rolling and twisting will tangle the line and give him just the resistance he needs to pull free. Sometimes when a fish is hopelessly entangled in the weeds, a fisherman can reach down with the landing net and bring the fish in, weeds and all.
Even when a fish has made a dive into the weeds and becomes hopelessly fouled up it's worth taking time to pull gently from all angles and allow periods of complete slack before pulling drastically. Of all the the tips for fishing in weedy water you read here or find elsewhere, start with this one - get a good idea to see just how strong a pull you can put on the line without having it break. If you know your line is strong enough to pull out the weeds in a given lake it will save a lot of time moving the boat back to the snagged lures to unhook them.
