Fly fishing creel baskets are a glimpse of the past, and offer a lot of functionality, as well as a vintage look at fly fishing.
Fly fishing creels, aside from looking old school and traditional, allow you to keep your catch fresh while you continue to fish. Wicker creel baskets are lightweight and the cracks in the creel basket allow air to flow through, keeping the fish you catch fresh. Often, fly fishermen used to line the inside of their wicker creels with moss found on the side of the river. This helped to keep the fish cool, especially during a hot day on the river.
There are newer versions of fly fishing creels now. Plastic creel bags are more lightweight, more portable, and usually can fit more fish in them. They can also be used with ice or ice packs to keep fish even fresher, and they are a lot easier to keep clean and fresh themselves.
Fly fishing creels are not being used as often now then in the past. It is rare to see a fly fisherman using a creel while on the river. With the advent of catch and release fishing, more and more fly fishermen decide to turn their catch loose rather than taking their limit eat. Whether you are going for a vintage look with a wicker creel, or prefer lighter plastic creels, the next time you are picking up some fly fishing streamers, invest in a good creel.
