Credit card debt can take control of your life. If your goal is debt reduction and you have found that you are in debt from over using your credit cards and need to lower you monthly payments there are a few things that you can do.
Lowering your monthly credit card payments can help you in many ways. The biggest way being that you will find you will have extra money left over to pay off other bills you might have or just have some extra cash in your pocket.
The first thing that you need to do in order to lower your monthly credit card payments is to find out what you owe and write everything down. Make sure you know what you owe to whom and how much your interest is with each and every credit card.
You are going to find that your highest interest rates are with department store credit cards or retail stores. These might be the credit cards that you should pay off first.
Once you have everything that you need to help you get your finances in order the first thing you need to do is to contact the customer service departments for each and every credit card that you have. Tell them that you want decreased monthly payments on your credit cards. Find out if you are eligible for a decrease in the current interest rate you are getting on your credit card.
Depending on what they tell you will help you determine your next course of action. If the credit card company is flexible and willing to give you a lower interest rate then you will find that your payments each month will decrease.
If they are willing to lower your interest rate then you need to ask them what you have to do to get your interest rate lowered. Many companies will tell you that you need to make payments that exceed your monthly minimum for a certain amount of months before you can get your interest rates lowered.
One other thing that you can do to get lower monthly payments on credit cards is to take out a home equity loan or line of credit. This will allow you to use the money to pay off your high interest loans and get back on track.
Once you have paid off the high interest credit cards you can work on paying off the loan. Your monthly payments will be lowered and you will find yourself with a little more breathing room.
