As downloading and sharing various forms of media over the internet becomes more popular, it is becoming more likely for users to run into codec and codec pack related problems. It is fairly common to run into a media file that either has no video or no audio, when you attempt to play it in your preferred video player. Upon experiencing these codec related issues, many users will do a quick google search and download a codec pack as is commonly suggested. Although this will usually fix the problem for that specific media file, many users are not aware that this is not the ideal solution, and could lead to future codec conflicts and confusion.
No codec pack contains all the ideal codecs for every media file type. What is not commonly known by many computer users is that adding additional codecs, or downloading a new codec without completely removing older ones can result in conflicts that are often a mess to sort out. To avoid all of this it is usually preferable, and much more simple, to simply download single codec files that you know you need for each file type. There are many programs that will tell you what codec is required for a specific video or audio file, and there are numerous free and safe websites that host these codec files for public download. Taking a few minutes to read either my codec guide, or someone elses, will save you future frustration and avoid codec conflicts in the future.
