Once termites establish a colony they can destructive, and tough to get rid of. They reproduce with the termite queens. Termites live and work within a caste system. The queen and king begin as a young couple who find a home together with plenty of wood, water, and shelter. The queen begins to lay eggs and the king and queen take care of them. It will be another couple of years before the colony really gets going. After that the termites have a very organized system of working, and caring for eggs. The queen can live as long as 50 years in some cases, growing as large as the size of a human thumb. She never quits laying the eggs of her offspring. After leaving the swarm with his queen, the king stays by her side for their lifetimes. The workers, soldiers, and swarmers are what make the colonies of termites as large and pesky as they are.
Termite baits can be found at hardware stores and are good for killing smaller colonies. There are two types of baits, below-ground and in-home. The below-ground baits are stakes that are placed in the ground. The termites dig until they reach this deadly mix of pesticide and wood. They bring this back to the rest of the colony and hopefully kill them and the queen. If the queen is not killed they will just rebuild their numbers over time.
In-home baits are placed in the house where termites have been spotted, such as crawl spaces or gaps in the foundation. Sometimes termite baits take awhile to work, but once the termites get to them it is a quick turn-around until entire colonies are killed. If termites are exceptionally bad it is best to go with a professional exterminator. They use liquid pesticides, which work to kill on contact but must be reapplied every two years or so. A licensed professional might use tenting as a pest control method if it is feasible. Tenting involves wrapping a rubber sealed cover around the entire structure and fumigating with pesticides and letting them work for a week.
