To decorate or re-decorate concrete floors, walls, or counter tops in your home or shop is also a process known as concrete resurfacing, and done correctly it can add tremendous depth, beauty, and lifespan to the concrete. There are also many different types of concrete resurfacing from stamping, to staining, to a variety of different coatings and sealers. Staining is the most popular and long lasting.
As long as there no large cracks, oil spills, or sealer on the concrete it can be stained. Oil and sealer will not allow the stain to permeate the concrete. You can test for sealer by applying water to the concrete, if it beads there is sealer that must be removed. If the problem of cracks or oil is really bad you may want to apply a layer of a solution of cement first, it is best to let it cure at least 30 prior to staining. Otherwise any cement can be stained regardless of age or condition.
If you are going for a look of marble, stone, leather whatever it may be, some imperfections in the concrete such as cracks, a little oil, roughness, etc., can actually help in achieving the look. It is important to note that staining concrete will enhance the flaws, not cover them. However, they may be disguised by the overall look. The overall cost of staining your concrete project will vary and depend on how elaborate your design is and the overall look you want to achieve.
There are many different techniques used in staining and designing floors that can be utilized. Such as etching, sandblasting, scoring and engraving. Also using color you can create any design you desire. You can make it appear to be wood or marble with inlays, or it can be some type of design or picture. The possibilities are virtually endless and only limited by your imagination.
