In the mid-20th century, it was pretty simple to choose an engagement ring. There were a handful of styles to choose from that were commonly available (and socially acceptable) -- but times have certainly changed since then! Now the sky is the limit, and modern engagement rings come in a dizzying array of settings, styles and stones.

For most people, the number one concern when shopping for an engagement ring is the price. A typical price tag for an engagement ring today will fall somewhere between $3000 and $6000. This is still a pretty wide price range, and there are quite a few different settings and styles available to meet your needs. Of course, the most expensive engagement rings will cost many times that amount.

After price is decided on, the next big decision concerns the choice of metal to use for the setting. For most people, gold is still the number one choice. However, platinum and titanium have become quite popular settings for modern engagement rings. For the finish, you have a choice of frosted, matte or polished.

The Tiffany design is still the most sought-after engagement ring style, because of its upright clean lines and its elegant sophistication (evoking images of “Breakfast at Tiffany's”). However, there are many other modern designs to choose as an alternative, such as the tension, bezel or invisible style settings.

Diamonds are still the first choice of gemstone for engagement rings, but other gems such as rubies, emeralds and especially sapphires are becoming increasingly popular. Ever since Princess Diana received a sapphire ring encased in diamonds from Prince Charles, sapphire engagement rings have become more popular than ever and it appears that selling them is a great way for jewelers to make money. They have even become popular enough for Prince William to select the very same design for Kate Middleton!

In days gone by, it required the skill of a master jeweler to create the perfect engagement ring. But today, modern engagement rings are designed and crafted with advanced technology that enables them to last a lifetime.
