Many people are very skeptical when it comes to alternative medicine. Most people would much prefer to head down to their family doctor in order to be prescribed a series of cure all capsules that are going to get rid of the complaint and allow the patient to carry on with their normal lives. Unfortunately, this type of thinking does not really work in the long term. If you are an insomniac you will know that it is very difficult to carry on a fully functional life while you are not getting any sleep. You may have also tried the direction of taking prescription sleeping pills in order to try and combat your insomnia. There are many different all natural sleep aids that you can try which do not have the same side-effects and negative long-term aspects that pharmaceutical drugs will have.

One of those natural sleeping aids is known as melatonin. Melatonin is a compound which is found naturally occurring in plants, microbes, and in animals. Melatonin is responsible for many different biological effects within the body. In human beings, and the pineal gland produces melatonin. This gland is located in the brain's centre and is roughly around the size of a pea. It is this gland that regulates the circadian rhythm, the sleep -- wake cycle, it causes the body to become drowsy and lowers the overall body temperature. The pineal gland actually produces a chemical called serotonin which at night is transformed into melatonin. The reason for this is that the melatonin production is actually inhibited by the presence of light and only really surfaces when the light fades and with the onset of darkness. It is known for this reason as the "hormone of darkness".

Taking small doses of melatonin several hours before going to bed aids natural sleep. Many people find that taking melatonin supplements when they have certain forms of insomnia can be really helpful. Much of the time, these melatonin capsules are sold in higher doses than are completely necessary. The method of taking serotonin is to take the capsule about half an hour before bedtime. There have been many studies and no real long-term side-effects have been found by using melatonin as a natural sleep aid. But, as with all natural sleep aids, caution should be taken. Before you go on any course of natural sleep aid you should consult with your family physician.
