It used to be that environmentalism was limited to politically charged people that had to take sizable risks to get their message heard. In recent years, though, this has changed with the emergence of the green economy. To be sure, there has long been an Eco-friendly market, but it is only recently that it has really gained momentum. Despite its prevalence, there are still many consumers who have not opted in to the green market. It seems to me that there are three main reasons for this:
- Uninformed consumers
- Western consumer culture
- Budgetary concerns
Being Informed About What the Green Market Has to Offer
I think many consumers are under the impression that the products in the green market are not going to fit their needs like conventional items; being uninformed like this can keep many a consumer out of the green economy. Let your curiosity guide you and check out some of the sites out there that sell Eco-products. There are also a plethora of blogs available with up to date information on going green.
Changing the Way We Think About Consumption
Part of our problem is that we tend to shop in a very wasteful fashion. We live in a culture that is built on products that we can throw away and forget about. Consumption in western culture is too short sighted. Part of going green is changing the way we think about shopping and consumption, and shifting our minds towards the long term effects of what we consume and how we consume it.
Can I Afford Eco-Products?
It used to be that shopping green cost way too much for the average consumer, but these days as the market has grown the prices have naturally dropped. Admittedly, they still tend to be slightly higher in price than conventional items, but with some creative editing of our shopping lists we can make room for sustainable shopping. The next time you go shopping, look through your list and see if there are any spurious items you know you do not need. Trust me, you will find some. Trade some of those out for one or two green items. Over time, you will find your home filled with a variety of Eco-products.
In short, getting into the green economy means being an informed consumer, changing the way we think about shopping and consumption, and finding some creative and fun ways to edit our shopping lists.
