There is no doubt that DIY experts can tell us a thing or two about sash window repair and restoration. In a recent survey, the majority of experts claimed that they would rather carry out sash window restoration than purchase new uPVC sash windows for their home. We contacted some of them in order to find out why.
One of the main reasons they gave for preferring to repair existing sash windows is that new sash windows can be expensive to purchase and if you repair your window properly you can still save quite a bit of money.
It is important when undertaking sash window restoration to ensure that you can upgrade the heat retention properties of your windows. In these times of energy awareness we all want windows that perform properly as well as looking well. The experts say that in many cases sealing around the window frame of an old timber sash window can improve its R-value considerably. (The R-value of a window is its resistance to losing heat).
If the frames are in good repair and deep enough, then double or even triple-glazing can be installed instead of single-glazing. This is an action which is guaranteed to help cut your fuel bills as much heat is lost through glazing which is insufficiently insulated. You can also take this opportunity to install toughened or security glazing if you desire it.
Sash window repair can include putting in place ancillary measures that will assist your windows to retain heat in the home. The hanging of heavy drapes in a room, or even good quality vertical blinds will help restrict the amount of warm air getting to the window and will hinder old air from getting into the room.
The experts do say that after making comparisons between the two courses of action, they being sash window replacement or sash window restoration, that you may decide eventually that your windows are too far gone to keep. However, they do say that you should explore all avenues before coming to that decision.
