If you discover termite infestation you will need to know the most effective way to kill these pesky creatures. There are many factors, including if you will rid your property of these invaders yourself or if a professional exterminator should be called.
One of the most important factors is knowledge of building construction. You will need to be able to pinpoint critical entry locations that are typically hidden and difficult to access. When it comes to large areas of infection (like a home), specialized equipment is required to complete the task thoroughly. Masonry drills, soil treatment rods, pumps, large-capacity tanks and potentially hundreds of gallons of termiticide (liquid pesticide) are required to inject the treatment into crucial locations like inside foundation walls, ground surrounding foundations and under concrete slabs or sidewalks. If the suspected infestation affects play equipment, sandboxes or mailboxes (any wooden structure well away from the foundation of a home), there will be less work required. If you are confident in your knowledge of detection when it comes to small scale termite extermination, multiple methods for self treatment are available at lumber yards, home retail stores or via the internet. Do it yourself methods like a termite stake kit can be very effective, however, they are not the best option for a large infestation. If you are dealing with a large scale termite infestation, consulting with a professional is highly recommended.
When calling a professional, check with two to three different termite extermination companies that are licensed by the Department of Agriculture or a state agency responsible for termite control. This will give you a chance to verify the extent of your termite problem while comparing company tactics and pricing. Asking family and friends for recommendations can prove invaluable as well.
Be advised that different companies provide different methods and different warranties. Exterminators use liquids, baits or a combination of the two. Fast acting liquids provide a chemical barrier preventing termites in the soil from reaching their intended targets. Baits utilize cardboard or some type of perishable food that is laden with slow acting chemicals fatal to termites. Both repellents and non-repellents can be used effectively; however, it is a combination of method and professional delivery that deem the best results in killing termites.
