Stop Fingernail Biting Now

Most former fingernail biters have some pretty scary stories about “cures” inflicted on them by their parents. Some recall their nails being taped and others remember their nails being coated with substances that could melt their eyeballs if the biter rubbed his eyes.

Thankfully, there are now easier – and more humane – ways to stop nail biting. Probably the most fun choice is to set up appointments for regular professional manicures. Having one’s nails buffed, shaped, and painted so perfectly can often act as sufficient motivation to stop a biter from making a mess of it all.

If regular manicures help stop your biting habit, be sure to keep your cuticles well-moisturized and trimmed because raggedy cuticles can encourage picking or nibbling at loose skin and that can lead back to more nail biting.

If the manicures do not help, there are 2 possible reasons behind the biting behavior. The first is that you may need to lessen the level of stress in your life. Daily meditation works for many people as they learn how to quiet their mind. Boredom may be another reason for nail biting and that can be remedied by keeping the hands busy with crafts, such as knitting or bead art.

If you still cannot stop fingernail biting, try keeping them trimmed short enough that there is simply not enough nail to bite. Keep them polish and keep the cuticles soft and smooth. If that doesn’t work, try aversion therapy. Tell yourself each time you bite your nails, you are eating germs left by others on things you have touched.  For the real hard core nail biters, there are still those bizarre substances you paint on your nails, so horrible smelling and tasting, you will never want to touch your nails again, let alone bite them.
