Europeans have been driving diesel cars technology for years, so it's no surprise that they have enthusiastically embraced biofuel technology. But for some reason, diesel and biodiesel have been slow to catch on in the United States. Most of the experts say it's because the price of gasoline is tightly regulated in the U.S., so that it doesn't reflect the heavy production costs and resource consumption inherent in the fuel. Then there's the U.S. consumer's bad experience with domestic diesel cars in the 1970s and 80s. These cars were unreliable, noisy, and emitted clouds of black smoke. But now as the U.S. government fights to keep a lid on gasoline prices, Americans are discovering the next generation of diesel cars with enhanced performance and low emissions that even meet California standards.
