Antique brass is one of the most beautiful and timeless materials that are available today. The term antique brass does not refer to a particular type of brass that has been aging for many years organically; the term actually refers to a process that is performed on existing pieces of pure brass to give it the look or the illusion of it being older then it really is.
The process of antiquing a piece of brass is a difficult one and should ideally be performed by somebody who understands the process. The process can be used on existing brass items or you can purchase items as small as an antique brass lamp or as large as an antique brass bed that have been through it already. Good attention must be paid to any item that is selected to go through the process manually because if an error is made the changes are often unreversable.
In the best case scenario, the item about to go through the antique brass treatment should be made out of pure brass. For the sake of this example, we will consider the antique brass lamp we had mentioned earlier. If you owned a brass lamp then you would check to make sure that it was made out of one hundred percent brass and is not brass plated; the reason behind this is materials that are not made from pure brass tend to get ruined during the antiquing process.
If you were to buy an antique brass lamp in stores, you would notice that most of them say they are antique brass plated. This means the shell of the lamp was treated with the process before being meshed together with the rest of the lamp. Even though your lamp is not pure brass, it saves you money and still looks the same.
All of this holds true for other things such as antique brass hardware. Most often you will save a lot of this hardware not offered as a pure antique bronze but rather being plated like the lamps. The reasoning and justification behind this approach is that it saves you money while still giving you the look of antique brass.
