Free makeup samples are ubiquitous in contemporary life. We are so used to them that they have essentially slipped to the back of our awareness. We do not consciously notice them or think about them except when we are seeking them out. But much of the time we don’t actually have to seek them out, so we tend to take them for granted.

Interestingly, makeup has been with us for eons. If you think about it hard enough, you will realize that you have seen evidence of makeup use among ancient civilizations. The next time you are looking at Egyptian hieroglyphics, take a close look at the faces of the people portrayed in them. You will be sure to notice that they have makeup around the eyes. This is clear evidence that the Egyptians (or at least some of them) used eye makeup. Of course it is possible that they used makeup for reasons completely different to ours. Maybe their motivations were spiritual, religious or superstitious. Additionally, their perception of beauty and make up with respect to different genders was not quite the same as the one that prevails in our society today. Both Egyptian men and women wore makeup at relevant occasions.

In more recent times, it is possible to find cultures where men wear makeup. The Wodaabe, resident in North Western Africa, engage in a ceremony called Gerewol once a year. At this ceremony, the young men have to dress up and wear elaborate makeup to compete for the attention of potential female lovers. It is a beauty pageant of sorts for men with women acting as judges. The men’s height, teeth and eyes are examined to determine how well they meet the criteria for ‘beauty’.

It is a curious event that draws global attention because it turns our familiar gender conventions on their head. Gerewol is revolutionary in other ways too: it is not unheard of for the married people attending it to forget their marital vows long enough to engage in flings. Others allow the flings to extend beyond Gerewol, ultimately marrying their new lovers.

The male participants in Gerewol smear red ocher on their faces. This is not unlike the foundation that Western women wear on their skin. They also wear what is essentially black eyeliner. This has parallels in the kohl that Western and Eastern women alike wear as eye makeup. All this suggests that, when it comes to makeup there are no hard and fast gender rules. This is something worth keeping in mind the next time you come across free makeup samples.
