Treating a very sensitive ailment on your infant’s already very sensitive facial skin can be overwhelming at times. An infant is unable to comfort themselves or tell you what hurts and what helps. To help you, here are some tried and true tips to help soothe your child and heal their skin.
- Your first step to an effective natural treatment for facial eczema is to use the right kind of cleanser. Traditional soaps are filled with harsh chemical detergents. These dry out the skin and aggravate already sore skin. Instead, try to find a natural cleanser. Find one that is made from mild, gentle ingredients that wash away dirt, germs, and foreign particles while retaining the skin’s natural moisture and oils.
- Check the washcloths you are using when you wash your infant’s face. If the cloth is rough, it can cause damage. Instead of simply removing foreign particles, it will tear at the already sensitive skin and weaken the skin’s structure. This can make the skin more prone to eczema or aggravate an existing case of eczema. You will also want to use a washcloth that is made from all natural fibers, like cotton, to further ensure you are not aggravating the skin.
- Invest in a high quality natural moisturizer, such as one made from oatmeal or cocoa butter. Experts know that a lack of moisture on the skin is mainly what causes eczema. Often infant skin is not able to naturally produce enough oil to lubricate the skin and maintain a protective barrier against eczema. When this happens, it is up to you to make sure that a gentle moisturizer is applied to the skin frequently throughout the day.
- Try cool compresses. An infant cannot express their discomfort from itching and it is difficult to distract them from their agitation. It is up to you to try to reduce the itching. Take a washcloth and soak it in a very watered down solution of the normal moisturizer you sue. Stick the washcloth in the freezer until it is cold, but not frozen. Press the cold washcloth gently to your infants face. The coolness will dramatically reduce the itchiness, but it will also bring down the swelling and pain related to the eczema.
