No one likes to get a speeding ticket. They are annoying. They take up a bunch of your time, and they hurt your pocketbook in more ways than one (the fine and the increased insurance costs). But, that is no reason to go in there and try to beat the thing on your own. There are seasoned traffic attorneys out there that can help you out, and you should strongly consider using them.
One thing you shouldn't do, though, is wait until your hearing is over to think about getting in touch with a traffic lawyer to help you. I can't tell you how many times I get phone calls from people who have just had their contested hearing, probably gone in there and give some excuses for why they were speeding, and then lost, and then want someone to help them.
The thing is, it is possible to try to help you. But it is going to be much more expensive than it would have been if you'd have called us right at the beginning for help. Why? Because now you aren't going in there and asking for a dismissal, you're asking for an appeal. This means you have to file a notice of appeal, write a brief, and then go in front of a completely different judge and try to convince them that the other judge made a mistake.
If it sounds difficult, it's because it is difficult. And it isn't really something that we do. The reason we don't is because they are often fruitless. There has to be an error in the decision of the judge, and if you didn't bring up the right arguments, then it is likely we won't be able to make them during the appeal.
Bottom line, it's always best to talk to a traffic attorney before you go to court. We aren't in there just making deals all the time. We actually have some expertise. So let us help you and use it. You'll be glad you did.
